Elevate Your Flight Skills with the Instrument Rating (IR)

The Instrument Rating (IR) is a valuable achievement that allows you to fly in all kinds of weather. This rating allows pilots to fly under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), which rely on instruments rather than visual references. To obtain an IR, pilots must complete additional ground school which is focused on navigation systems, meteorology, air traffic control procedures, and instrument approaches.

The IR significantly increases safety by enabling pilots to continue flying when visibility is low or during poor weather conditions. Moreover, many commercial operators require an IR for employment, making it a valuable asset for those pursuing careers in aviation. Candidates are required to log a number of hours of instrument time and complete a long IFR cross-country flight as part of training. The requirements vary between Part 61 and Part 141 pilot training (see table).

Instrument Rating Requirements Part 61 Part 141
Minimum instrument flight hours 40 hours (actual or simulated) 35 hours (actual or simulated)
Dual instruction with CFI 15 hours minimum All 35 hours with CFI
Total cross-country PIC hours 50 hours required No minimum required
Long IFR cross-country flight Required (250 NM, 3 approaches, etc.) Required (250 NM, 3 approaches, etc.)
Training device/simulator allowance Permitted, with certain limits Permitted, stricter limits
Ground school Required Required

The Instrument Rating (IR) pathway advances pilot capabilities to navigate in a variety of weather conditions, and is the next step for aspiring professional pilots. AV8 Flight School prepares you for the challenges of instrument flying, helping you achieve the greater safety and confidence you need for your aviation journey ahead.
