AV8 Questions: Interviews with Aviators

Welcome back to another installment in our series, AV8 Questions: Interviews with Aviators! The path into aviation and becoming a pilot can be straightforward, or not! We’re curious about how our fellow pilots became interested in aviation, and their challenges and inspiration. We hope you enjoy the interviews and discover the potential available to those with an interest in aviation.

Interview with Brenda Briggs, AV8 Flight School Accounting & Human Resources

When did you become interested in aviation? I have always enjoyed flying commercially, but I didn’t discover aviation as a career option until I was in my mid 30’s.

Are your family or friends interested in flying? My grandpa was a pilot in World War II. My husband started flying airplanes last year, and my kiddo (he’s almost 11) loves to fly in the helicopter with George. He asks for a flight at Christmas time each year to see the lights from above.

How did your career in aviation begin? I came to AV8 back in 2016 when we were still Hummingbird to help the previous owner with the accounting. At first, it was a “side gig” on the weekends, but it soon became the highlight of my week.

Has your career evolution followed an expected path? If you would have told me when I first started school to become an accountant that I’d be doing the books for a flight school, I would have laughed in your face. After all the industries I’ve worked in, however, this is definitely the most fun.

Do you have a favorite aspect of your work? I love getting to know the students and instructors, and I love how excited everyone is to learn. At the risk of sounding too much like a mom, I am so proud when they solo for the first time, or pass their checkrides, or go off to the airlines.

Is there a time in aviation history, or aircraft that you find most fascinating? I love the stories about World War II pilots and the difference they made in the war effort.

When is, or was, your favorite industry-related event, such as annual camp or fly-in? I really enjoy the Flight School Association of North America (FSANA) convention each year in February. It is fun to meet others who are as passionate about flight training as we are. I always learn so much! Plus, it’s usually held someplace warm, which is nice in February.

What is the future of flight for you? Now that my husband is flying, I have heard that I should fly too. I’m definitely thinking about it. In the meantime, I’ll keep sticking my thumb out on the ramp for a ride now and then. I’m good at providing weight in the back of the aircraft – anything to promote student learning!
