Aircraft Insurance for Pilots and Student Pilots

Airplane and Helicopter Insurance for Renters

While aircraft renters’ insurance may not be required for you as a pilot, it is an important consideration.

The owners of aircraft at flight schools and elsewhere are required to carry insurance coverage for helicopters and airplanes in their fleet. Such insurance protects the owners, but typically is limited in coverage for damage caused by a renter or student. While additional insurance purchased by the renter may not be required by an aircraft owner or school, it may be in a student pilot’s best interest to purchase such insurance.

What is Aviation Renter’s Insurance?

Pilots may purchase their own insurance policy which is entirely separate from insurance carried by an aircraft owner or flight school. Renter’s insurance exists to protect pilots in the event of physical damage occurring to a rented or student-piloted aircraft, and in addition, legal liability arising out of the use of an unowned airplane or helicopter.

There are several providers available, each can be explored for their options and costs:

How Do I Select an Insurance Plan?

As you review coverage options, you’ll find a variety of price ranges and coverage options. Some coverage may include policy caps, or additional fees, or a range of deductibles. Whether you are renting or borrowing an aircraft, it’s best to investigate your potential obligations, and protect your interests accordingly. Both the insurers above and other sources provide tips on evaluating and selecting providers and plans.
